In the morning\u2026<\/h3>\n

Start your tour in the Historic Centre of Santiago do Cac\u00e9m<\/a>\u00a0as this transports us to a landscape from another time and memories that allow us to experience the past like a warrior in battle.<\/p>\n

On the Romeirinhas Tour<\/a>, which runs around the Historic Centre, we come across the Miradouros (Lookouts)<\/a>\u00a0and the Capela de S\u00e3o Pedro (Chapel of St. Peter)<\/a>, which play host to a beautiful landscape that appears to fall into the Impressionist style.<\/p>\n

The Castelo (Castle)<\/a>\u00a0and the Igreja Matriz de Santiago (Mother Church of Santiago), <\/a>, both national monuments, form the heart of the Historic Centre. But there are other sites that deserve mention, the Igreja do Esp\u00edrito Santo (Church of the Holy Spirit)<\/a>, the Pelourinho<\/a>, the Torre do Rel\u00f3gio (Clock Tower)<\/a>, the Antigo Hospital do Esp\u00edrito Santo (Former Hospital of the Holy Spirit)<\/a>, the Antiga Casa do Prior (Former Prior\u2019s House)<\/a>, the Antiga Casa da Colegiada (Former Chapterhouse)<\/a>, the Pal\u00e1cio da Carreira (Carreira Palace)<\/a>\u00a0and the Igreja da Miseric\u00f3rdia (Church of Mercy)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Tapada dos Condes de Avillez<\/a>, a botanical garden with a poetic park that conveys peace and serenity and, as a backdrop the Palace<\/a>\u00a0with the same name, are also worth visiting.<\/p>\n

The Antiga Judiaria (Old Jewish Quarter)<\/a>, the Sociedade Harmonia (Harmony Society)<\/a>, the Casa Verde (Green House)<\/a>, the Casa Amarela (Yellow House)<\/a>, the Casa das Heras (Ivy House)<\/a>\u00a0and the Antigos Pa\u00e7os do Concelho (Former Town Hall)<\/a>, as well as the huge, scattered manor houses, finish off the Historic Centre.<\/p>\n

For lunch\u2026.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leaving the Historic Centre, you can head to one of a range of restaurants<\/a>\u00a0in the city, where we recommend the local produce of excellent quality. Typical dishes are: \u201cOs miolos\u201d (brains)<\/a>, os jantarinhos and cozidos (pork and bean casseroles and stews)<\/a>\u00a0and the delicious Black Iberian Pork<\/a>.Migas \u00e0 Alentejana (pork with a breadcrumb paste)<\/a>, Sopas de Tomate (Tomato Soups)<\/a>, Gaspacho<\/a>, A\u00e7orda (bread with olive oil, herbs and poached eggs)<\/a>\u00a0and Pratos de Ca\u00e7a (game dishes)<\/a>\u00a0complete a full menu.<\/p>\n

In the afternoon\u2026<\/h3>\n

After lunch, head to the Moinho Municipal da Quintinha (Quintinha Municipal Mill)<\/a>\u00a0where you can see all the mechanisms and traditional processes of milling cereals.<\/p>\n

You should then visit the Capela de S\u00e3o Br\u00e1s (Chapel of St. Blaise)<\/a>\u00a0and the Ru\u00ednas Romanas de Mir\u00f3briga (Roman Ruins of Mir\u00f3briga)<\/a>, an archaeological site consisting of thermal baths, a Roman bridge, a domus with frescos, a forum, temples and Roman paving. It also hosts the only Roman hippodrome known in Portugal. The site has a reception and visitor centre and a thematic exhibition room<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next you should visit the Municipal Museum<\/a>, sited in the former prison, and continue on towards the Rio da Figueira Country Park<\/a>, where you will find the Quinta do Conde de Avillez (the Count of Avillez\u2019s former villa), with a garden, picnic area and pools, forming a real leisure venue that should be enjoyed.<\/p>\n

Here, we recommend taking a break for a snack: Alentejo bread with local cheese<\/a>, spread with honey or traditional jams<\/a>, or hot, with olive oil and sugar, the so-called tiborna<\/em>.<\/p>\n

For dinner…<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For dinner, we recommend local restaurants<\/a> where you can enjoy a delicious and refined meal, accompanied by a fine local wine<\/a>, red or white. Do not finish your dinner without trying the santiago cake<\/a>, the alcomonias (sweets made of syrup and manioc flour), rebu\u00e7ados de pinh\u00e3o (pine nut candy) or the pupias (sweetbreads)<\/a>\u00a0duly accompanied by pennyroyal or blueberry liqueurs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At night…<\/strong><\/h3>\n

And as having fun and socializing is essential, we suggest the Bars and Nightclubs<\/a>, or a trip to the Cinema at the Ant\u00f3nio Chainho Municipal Auditorium<\/a> in Santiago do Cac\u00e9m.<\/p>\n
