The opening of the Santo André Lagoon to the sea is scheduled for March 28 (Wednesday) at 4:00 p.m. Annually, the occasion brings hundreds of people to the Lagoa de Santo André, who do not want to miss a spectacle of rare beauty. Changes may occur to the planned, depending on the physical factors acting, namely climacteric conditions and sea state.
The opening of the Lagoa de Santo André is made every year at a time always near the equinox of spring, a process that is in charge of the Portuguese Agency of the Environment / Administration of the Hydrographic Region of Alentejo.
The opening of the Santo André Lagoon to the sea aims to renew the water of the lagoon, cleaning and washing of its bottom and the entrance of some fish species, especially the alvins and eels. The process, once made by the force of “arms and animals,” has been replaced for several years by machines.
